Columbus Area

Within the Columbus, OH area, there are 155,000 immigrants and growing - primarily from Bhutan, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, India, and Mexico. Thus making up around 8% of the city's population.

Refugees, on the other hand, have grown to 24,000 - primarily from Somalia, Bhutan, and Nepal.

In recent years there has been an increase in the Afghan and Iraqi populations coming to Columbus. Columbus is ranked eighth nationally with the number of refugees taken in over the past ten years, contributing to Columbus' position of the14th largest city in the United States.

The definition of a refugee is someone who:

"Owing to well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being outside the country of his former habitual residence, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to it."
